Lady Charlotte Susan Maria Campbell (Bury) - one of the greatest beauties of her day - created stir when her Diary was first published anonymously in 1838. It is said that her husband stole her diary, never intended for publication, and added embellishments and disguises. It had at once 'un succes de scandale' and immense sales. It was fiercely attacked by reviewers, calling it vulgar and untrustsworthy. The diary gives though, as no other book, an account of the curious and undignified Court of Queen Caroline, at home and abroad.
