A facsimile edition of the original 1938 publication. 110pp with numerous colour, full page illustrations and smaller illustrations in text. In pictorial boards with titles front and spine. 8vo. Boards a little rubbed at corners and spine ends Internally neat, clean, bright and tight. In an illustrated dust jacket, with light chipping on lower leading corner and head of spine. Jacket is now protected in a Brodart-style sleeve, fitted without the use of tape or adhesives. First published in 1938, this classic book introduces the British High Street, pairing the timeless illustrations of Eric Ravilious with an engaging text by architectural historian J M Richards. Only 2000 copies of the original book were printed before the plates were destroyed in the London Blitz. As a result it has become one of the most collectible of all artist's books from this period. This facsimile edition features all 24 of Ravilious's illustrations in exquisite colour and an essay by Gill Saunders, putting the book and its history into context.
