368pp Colour plate frontispiece and 50 further illustrations, some in colour, in text designed by Bayard and other artists from sketches by the author. Eight page introduction in Memoriam of Robert Michael Ballantyne. Decorated and illustrated cloth boards (lightly mottled, worn at edges and joints, a little rounded at corners and spine ends). Upper edge gilt. Prize plate on front pasted down endpaper indicating that the volume was awarded to one Fred Smith by the Wesleyan Sunday School in Ossett in 1911. Occasional spotting and p14-15 has a small portion missing from the upper corner. Before the advent of dust jackets, many books, especially those for children were bound in brightly coloured cloth with pictorial blocking in gold and colours, often on the spine as well as the front board. This volume is one of those, and a particularly clean and bright example. BookAddiction has many of these Edwardian and Victorian bindings in stock.
