xii, 796pp, with two colour plates, a coloured map, many line drawings in text and page decorations throughout. In red cloth-covered boards with black decorations and lettering, black titles on spine.ย  Title page printed in red and black.ย  4to.ย  Cloth a little worn, small bumps and rubs on corners, rounded at ends of a moderately sunned spine.ย  Minor marks and spotting on text block edges.ย  Some light toning and spotting to endpapers and first and last few leaves, one strained gutter, else internally neat, clean, bright and tight. Maspero was a French Egyptologist, perhaps the leading Egyptologist of his generation, who served as Director General of Excavations and Antiquites for the Egyptian government.ย  This is a monumental work, covering the early history of Egypt, Syria and Assyria from the first Chaldaen Empire and the Herids in Egypt to the rise of Syrian Empire and the Hebrews and Philistines in Damascus and the 21st Egyptian Dynasty.
