First edition, first impression (not published in the UK until 1961). 184pp plus publisher's adverts at rear. 8vo. Numerous monochrome illustrations and decorations in text. Original orangey-pink cloth boards with compass-style decoration and vignette of Queen Victoria on front and similar spine decorations (very lightly rubbed and faded at extremities). Maps on endpapers. Unclipped dust jacket, printed on underside as well as outward side, lightly chipped at edges with a couple of short closed tears. Half-title page inscribed in author's hand "To Rita, with love for Easter 1959. This is the book all the little dears write to us about!!". The recipient was Rita Smith who, for many years, was the author's secretary and typist. DJ now protected in archival quality clear film sleeve. Account of the life and times of Queen Victoria aimed at young readers. Part of the publisher's "World Landmark" series.
