Former ambassador to Japan, Sir Hugh Cortazzi, explores 19th century episodes in Anglo-Japanese cultural relations, and response of the Japanese authorities to the popularisation of Japan's cultural influence. The Japanese Native Village displayed Japanese life and crafts in a replica village created in Knightsbridge. In the same year, Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta The Mikado was the first attempt to use Japan as a theme for a British theatrical production.
