First edition, first impression. xvi, 398pp, with tissue-guarded portrait plate frontispiece, further monochrome plates interleaved in text, page decorations etc. Blue cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering stamped on upper panel and spine. 8vo. Cloth rubbed and rounded at corners and spine ends, some small marls and mottling on verso. Discreet call number on spine. Text block edges dust darkened. Bookplate from the South West Essex Technical College School of Art Library on front paste down, with signs of library markings removal on front endpapers, small stamp on title page and rear endpapers. A hint of toning on first and last few pages.
