Complete in seven volumes (eight books - volume 3 is in two parts). Volumes published between 1968 and 1991.ย  xx, one folding map, 784pp; xviii, 946pp, 44pp of black and white plate illustrations; lxxvi, 624pp, 36pp of black and white plate illustrations; xx, [2], 627-1488, [2]pp, 106pp of black and white plates, 4pp colour plates; xiv, 734pp, 14pp black and white plates, 4pp colour plates; xiv, 764pp, 16pp black and white plates; xxiv, 1084pp, 72pp black and white plates; xxiv, 1072pp, 64pp black and white plates, 4pp colour plates; all volumes also have occasional maps, figures and drawings in text.ย  Volumes bound in green cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering on red relief on spine. Top edges sprayed green (volumes 4 & & only).ย  8vos.ย  All volumes have perhaps a hint of dustiness, slight and faint shadowing on text block edges else neat, clean, bright and tight throughout.ย  Paper dust wrappers very slightly rubbed on corners, very lightly shelf worn; one volume is price clipped. A monumental work, planned not simply as a political history of Iran but also a survey of the cultures which have flourished in the Iranian region, and their contribution to the civilisation in the wider world, covering all aspects of religious, philosophical, economic, scientific and artistic elements of Iranian civilisation, with emphasis on the geographical and ecological factors which have contributed to the special characteristics of the region.ย  Handsome and imposing set.ย  Very large, very heavy, very hard to find as a complete set. Individual volumes titles are The Land of Iran; The Median and Achaemenian Periods; The Seleucid, Parthian and Sasanian Periods; From the Arab Invasion to the Saljuqs; The Saljuq and Mongol Periods; The Timurid and Safavid Periods; From Nadir Shah to the Islamic Republic.
