First edition, first impression.  416pp, with colour plate illustrations and monochrome illustrations in text.  Quarter bound in white cloth over cream-coloured boards, with gilt titles at spine.  8vo.  Volume is neat, clean, bright and tight throughout barring a little dustiness on the upper text block edge.  In its original, illustrated dust wrapper, a little bumped on edges and gently rubbed on corners, slightly shelf worn. A handsome work on the history of the Italian city of Venice in the 15th and 16th centuries, when the city was at the zenith of its influence and power, relating the history of the city through its art and in turn illuminating its art through history.
