First edition, first printing.  264pp, with colour plate illustrations.  Quarter bound in brown cloth over brown paper-covered boards with gilt lettering on the spine.  Maps on endpapers.  8vo.  Cloth slightly pushed at spine ends and very slightly rubbed on extreme corners else neat, clean, bright and tight throughout.  In its original glossy dust wrapper, a little bumped on extreme edges and slightly shelf worn. A study of the Renaissance period told through a series of studies of key players and influencers in the era - Titian, Jan Hus, Catherine de' Medici, Galileo, John Milton, as well as some less familiar figures such as Gluckel of Hamelin, a female merchant; student and teacher Thomas Platter and the simple, religious man, Ralph Josselin.
