Undated but circa 1900. 248pp, [8]pp publisher's ads. Blue cloth-covered boards; gilt design on front, gilt titles on spine. 12mo. Slightly sun-faded spine, rubbed corners and spine ends with cloth wearing. Top text block edge dust damaged, remaining edges tanning. Endpapers and prelims tanning, front free endpaper and half-title page missing; pages ageing; volume a little loose. Otherwise, internally neat and clean.
Lytton's science fiction novel, The Coming Race, was first published anonymously in 1871. Some readers have believed its account of a superior subterranean master race and the Vril energy-form; and others, including theosophists Helena Blavatsky, William Scott-Elliot, and Rudolf Steiner, accepted it was based, at least in part, on occultist truths.
