First edition, first impression. [viii], 198pp, with a single central section of black and white illustrations. Blue cloth boards , gilt titles to spine. 8vo. Cloth very slightly pushed at spine tips. Top text block edge dust dulled. Internally neat, clean and tight. In its original gently shelf worn dust jacket, bumped on edges and slightly  rubbed on corners and spine ends. An absorbing study of an eventful period in the life of a school. E H Goddard (Ned) became headmaster at Aske's School, Hatcham in 1932, when the country was suffering from the privations of post-depression. His headmastership  continued through the second world war, the years of reconstruction and into the Cold War. With a wealth of detail recording the successes and failures of Aske's School, Hatcham, it also provides an insight into its evolution in a changing social environment.
