48 plate sketch illustrations (96pp). Black cloth boards with blind ruled decorations and gilt lettering to spine , possibly a later rebind (worn, a little rubbed at edges, rounded at corners and spine tips). Lovely dye-speckled text block edges. Endpapers tanned, with occasional spotting internally and the odd strained gutter. A tight, square, robust and clean volume. A selection of enchanting and amusing sketch drawings to illustrate some commons and lesser known proverbs of the mid 19th century, from The Pot Calling The Kettle Black to Cats Hide Their Claws and Much Meat, Much Malady.
