Kay Nielsen (1886-1957) was a Danish illustrator, popular in the early part of the 20th century during the Golden Age of Illustration, often best remembered for his collaborations with Walt Disney, contributing story sketches and illustrations, not least for Fantasia (1940).ย Alongside Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac, he was one of the triumvirate of great fairy tale illustrators, known for his soft yet ornate pastels and splendid use of dream elements.ย His illustrations often accompanied the fairy tale collections of the Brother Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen, as well as Nordic fables recounted in the East of the Sun and West of the Moon.ย This is an enchanting compilation of 59 full colour reproductions of his fairy tale illustrations.
