Hawkes and Sons was established in London in 1865 as a music publishing company but as grew the company expanded its operations into supplying and manufacturing musical instruments. Its 1914 catalogue features violins from the leading makers of the time including Enrico Rocca, Guiseppe Pedrazzini, Giovanni Schwarz, Thomas Earle Hesketh (said to be the best English manufacturers of violins and others. Also includes a guide to violin values, tips on what makes for a good violin etc as well as notes about the major manufacturers.
