Mad Jack Mytton, as he was known, (1796-1834) was an aristocrat, rake and eccentric of the Regency period, briefly a Tory Member of Parliament (paying for his votes) for Shrewsbury and sometime High Sheriff of Shropshire and Merionethshire.ย Disreputable, he was a gambler and enjoyed horse-racing - his horse won the Gold Cup in 1825ย - as well as hunting.ย A spend thrift, he was often in debt, and ultimately imprisoned in Shrewsbury Goal.
