Popular edition (first published in 1896).  viii, 348, 4pp, with monochrome plate frontispiece, four further plate illustrations and drawings in text.  Burgundy cloth covered boards with gilt lettering to spine.  8vo.  Cloth a little tired and marked, gently rubbed and rounded at corners and spine ends.  Upper text block edge dull, remaining edges slightly spotted.  Endpapers lightly tanned and some mild foxing on first and last few leaves.  One strained gutter ahead of the preface. An historical account examining the various marriage negotiations surrounding Elizabeth I, exploring the political and diplomatic machinations behind her emergence as the Virgin Queen and the profound political and social consequences of her decision to remain unmarried.
