First edition, first printing.  278pp, with two maps and maps on endpapers.  Green cloth-covered boards, gilt lettering on the spine.  8vo.  Cloth gently rubbed and rounded at corners and spine ends, a little soft.  Internally neat, clean, bright and tight. In its original dust wrapper, a little bumped and toned on edges, shelf worn. Maiwand was probably the most crushing defeat that the British Army suffered in India.  This a thorough and well-balanced study of the military and political background to the campaign and the events leading up to the battle, giving a vivid description of life on the North West Frontier in the late 19th Century and a dramatic account of the battle of Maiwand.
