First edition, first impression.ย 264pp, with plate illustrations and many, many examples of wood engravings and wood cuts in text.ย Beige cloth-covered boards, blind embossed motif on upper panel and gilt lettering on spine.ย Bevelled edges.ย 4to.ย Boards a lightly soiled. gently rounded on spine ends, a little sunned over spine.ย An ex university library copy with call number taped to spine, bar code and lending sheet on front free endpaper and stamps and minor annotations on the copy right page.ย There is also an ex libris bookplate on the front paste down (from Canterbury Free Library (no other library markings).ย Some scattered foxing on first and last few leaves else internally neat. clean, bright and tight.
A substantial and robust volume on the history of wood engraving and wood cut illustration, with a detailed history of techniques and chapters on book illustration in various European countries; a chapter devoted to Durer and another to Bewick, Blake and Gaugin, amounting to a substantial, scholarly work.
