John Bellany (1942=2013) changed the course of painting in Scotland.Β His intensely felt images of fisher folk and their precarious lives at sea were a direct challenge to the much diluted Scottish Colourist tradition and were at odds with the decorative, drawing-room pictures of much contemporaryΒ Scottish painting in the 1960s.Β This volume includes essays and reproductions of his works from the key period of the artist's career, beginning with the much-celebrated paintings of fishermen and fishing boats from the mid 1960s to the darker and harrowing pictures of the early 1970s and 1980s which seem to to explode as Bellany battles with real and imagined demons.
