First edition, first impression.  xvi, 466pp, with black and white plate illustrations and numerous figures in text.  Orange cloth-covered boards with black lettering to spine.  8vo.  Cloth a little tired, gently rubbed around edges and spine joints, gently rounded on corners and spine ends.  Some faint spotting to text block edges and first and last few pages.  Gift inscription, dated 1934, neatly inked on the front free endpaper and some minor signs of use but generally internally neat, clean and tight. An evocative vintage volume on this development and history of the study of chemistry and its major advances, from the transition from alchemy to chemistry in the early modern period to the early years of the 20th century.
