John Gale Jones,ย a radical orator and a member of the London Corresponding Society until its suppression in 1798, toured Kent, giving political and rousing speeches in the early 1970s: his Sketch of a Political Tour through Rochester, Chatham, Maidstone and Gravesend, &c was first published in 1796.ย In this edition, it is preceded by a contextual and analytical introduction by local historian Philip MacDougall.
