Birobidzhan (Birobijan) is the administrative centre of the Jewish Autonomous Oblast in Russia, approved by the Politburo in 1928 as a destination for the relocation of Russian (and later other) Jews.  The Novosti Press Agency was, from the late 1950s through to the 1980s, the leading information and press body of the Soviet State.
