First edition, first impression.ย  viii, 254pp.ย  In a later binding of plain, paper-covered boards. Some pages uncut. Deckled edges.ย  8vo.ย  Boards are heavily worn, marked and rubbed;ย  cracked all around spine, front panel detached.ย  An ex university library copy with bookplate on front paste down, lending sheet and barcode on front free endpaper and small stamp on verso of title page (no other library markings).ย  Deckled edges discoloured by dust.ย  Internally neat, clean and tidy, barring stated library markings.ย  A good working, reference copy, suitable for restoration. Fletcher (died 1848), was a Catholic priest and professor at St Omer throughout the time of the imprisonment of some college members following the French Revolution.ย  His 'Difficulties of Protestantism, first published in 1829 at a time when greater Catholic emancipation was a major topic of political debate, examines perceived inconsistencies and challenges within Protestant doctrine and is widely considered significant as a part of the contemporary Catholic apologetics against the Church of England and a key text in the context of 19th century Anglican-Catholic debates.ย  Scarce in its original edition.
