Beowulf is an Old English poem, an epic in the tradition of Germanic heroic legends, set in pagan Scandinavia in the 5th to 6th centuries. The original date of the poem is hotly contested, but it is certain that there was a manuscript version produced in the late 10th or early 11th century.
