[viii', 392, [2]pp.  Dark blue cloth boards with gilt lettering and decoration front and spine.  12mo.  Cloth a little tired, rubbed and rounded at corners and spine ends, a little rubbed along joints, faded and creased spine.  Text block edges unevenly toned and somewhat spotted.  The front free endpaper is torn and creased and stuck to the pastedown, with a damaged errata slip pasted on. Paged toned and showing occasional signs of handling. Volume shaken. First published in 1911 in Japan,  The Lotus Gospel compared the symbolic teachings of Mahayan Buddhism with those of the Catholic church, examining their historical and geographical differences and similarities.  Gordon also looks at the influence of Mahayan Buddhism particularly the Lotus Sutra, on Japanese culture and on the art of the Pilgrimage Era.  Elizabeth Anna Gordon (1851-1925) (nee Henry) was a British writer who explored comparative religions and mythologies, particularly Christianity and Buddhism.  A hard to find title.
