Complete in two matching volumes. First English edition, first printing, translated into English by H L R Edwards. The Green Huntsman: 320pp. Green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles on spine. Rubbed spine ends. Paper dust jacket has light foxing. Chipped at ends with some shelf wear. Three short closed tears. Mild foxing to text block edges and prelim pages. The Telegraph: 328pp. Green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles on spine. Rubbed spine ends. Paper dust jacket has light foxing. Chipped mainly at top end. Two closed tears one of which has had a tape repair on the inside. Very mild foxing to text block edges. Mild foxing to prelim pages. 8vo. DJ now protected in an archival quality mylar wrapper which is not adhered to the jacket or book in anyway. A lovely matching set of the first English translation of Stendhal's great unfinished novel, which appeared posthumously under the title Lucien Leuwen. Begun in 1834, Stendhal realised that its outspoken political criticism made publication impossible while he remained a Government official. He abandoned the work in 1836, three-quarters finished and with the end sketched out.
