xxvi, [3], 30-198pp. With wood engraved illustrations by Clennel from designs by Thurston. With an unattributed life of Beattie preceding. Green printed card covers (heavily worn and rubbed at edges, titles faded, backstrip chipped with small loss, corners rounded). Endpapers repaired, discoloured, with some pencil notes and a previous owner's stamp; a little toning, gutters grubby around title page, which has small corner crease, else just the occasional spot or sign of fingering. James Beattie, (1735 - 1803) was a Scottish poet, moralist, & philosopher. 'The Minstrel; or, The Progress of Genius' was originally published in two volumes, in 1771 and 1774. This later edition from 1814, complete in one volume, contains some of his other poetry and notes on the Minstrel.
