668pp, tissue-guarded frontispiece. Profusely illustrated throughout. Buckram covered boards, blind ruled with gilt decorations and lettering to its five-panelled spine. Silk moire endpapers. Bboards worn and rubbed at edges and spine joints, rubbed through at rounded corners, cracked around upper portion of spine, fraying at heel of spine. Endpaper gutter cracked, loosen from backstrip at rear endpapers. Impression of bookplate on front paste down, scattered spotting to prelims, else internally neat, clean, bright and robust. Charles Albert d'Arnoux, who used the pseudonym Bertall, was a French illustrator, cartoonist and writer. Known as one of the most prolific illustrators of the 19th century and a pioneer of photography. Bertall illustrated works by Balzac, Dumas, Cooper and Perrault, and many others.
