652pp. Profusely illustrated throughout. Buckram covered boards, blind ruled with gilt decorations and lettering to its five-panelled spine. Soiled silk moire endpapers. Boards lightly worn and rubbed at edges and spine joints and ends, rubbed through at rounded corners, cracked at head of spine. Backstrip partially detached from text block at front endpapers. Some very faint and occasional spotting, else internally neat, clean, bright and robust. Charles Albert d'Arnoux, who used the pseudonym Bertall, was a French illustrator, cartoonist and writer. Known as one of the most prolific illustrators of the 19th century and a pioneer of photography. Bertall illustrated works by Balzac, Dumas, Cooper and Perrault, and many others.
