Complete in two volumes.  A facsimile reprint of the original 1912 edition.  xii, 376pp; viii, 388pp, with some 1,400 in text illustrations across the two volumes.  Bot volumes uniformly bound in green publisher's cloth with gilt lettering to spine.  8vos.  Cloth gently rubbed and rounded at corners and spine ends.  Upper text block edges of both volumes significantly dust darkened, remaining edges have scattered spotting.  The front free endpaper of volume one has been neatly removed.  Some scattered spotting on first and last few pages of both volumes else internally neat, clean, bright and tight.  Both volumes in their original paper dust jackets, price clipped, rubbed around edges, bumped aling upper edges, toned around edges and over spines, with a dew mild marks and a little shelf wear. A comprehensive and important work on ancient and medieval symbolism and imagery in both Eastern and Western cultures, with the latter chapters examining the effect of symbolism on language.  Specific topics examined include King Solomon, the story of Cinderella, the works of Renaissance scholar Camenius, the Dair Shulamite, the Stone Hinge ;Henge], the mythologu of the White Horse etc.
